New virtual house shows possibilities for housing adaptations for people with spinal injuries and other disabilities

Spinal cord and other serious injuries can cause huge disruption to the lives of both the individual injured and their family. They can mean a total rethink of both everyday and long term plans and choices, affecting family members, employment, healthcare and many other facets of life.

Legal firm Irwin Mitchell LLP asked specialist equipment and adaptations occupational therapist Jenny Severn and occupational therapy manager Denise Slack to work with them on an innovative project: To develop a virtual house that aims to explain the changes that may be required to a home if someone has a serious injury that results in them becoming a wheelchair user some or all of the time.

The project focused on six key areas of a house - the living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, outdoor access and a therapy room - to highlight the main modifications that can be made to ensure full access and independent living.

We're proud of the result and hope that anyone affected by disability will benefit from being able to access the interactive house.
