Supporting someone with a brain injury is a fulfilling and challenging role. Every person you support is unique.
This accredited 5-day course helps you to understand how the brain works, how an injury can affect someone and what you can do to support them effectively. The knowledge and skills you gain, together with your experience of working with the person will help you to increase your personal effectiveness in your role as their support worker.
Support workers consistently feedback how useful the course has been in helping them understand their clients better and also how much they benefit from peer support and the opportunity to share experiences and ideas with other support workers.
Who is the training for?
Support workers who are working with adults who have had a brain injury. In order to get the most out of the course, we recommend that you have been working with your client for several weeks so that the information on the course makes sense.
How long is the training?
The whole course is 5 days. This is split over a 10-week period to give you opportunity to consolidate your learning in practice.
There is also an option to do only one unit, which would require attendance on 3 of the days.
The course comprises two units, one focusing on the role of the support worker and the other on understanding the client’s needs and experiences. Both are aimed specifically at your role working with someone with a brain injury in the community.
You will have the opportunity to gain an accredited award by completing a portfolio of work. This gives some acknowledgment for all you learn on the course and the hard work you do in your everyday jobs.
A support worker who completed the course said, “I think everyone who goes on the course will really enjoy it.” He reflected that, “it was good to receive accreditation; it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
